6. Amrita Sher-Gil’s Village Scene
The most expensive woman painter of India, Amrita Sher-Gil, is never a surprise member of this elite club. It was only very recently her painting ‘Village Scene‘ was sold for around 6.9 crore in an auction in India. This is a clear indication of increasing acceptance of her work and legacy. Paintings by this legendary painter and inspiration for many are truly a priceless treasure and even the Indian government has acknowledged her works as National Art Treasures.
5. Vasudeo S. Gaitonde’s Untitled Painting
Considered as one of the best abstract art painters of India, Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, is well known for his paintings which are described as similar to free flowing river. His vision and the way he would depict those visions on the canvas would attract many eyes. The pace of his work was rather slow and this resulted in a lesser number of finished paintings. An untitled work of Vasudeo S. Gaitonde was sold for around $1.4 milllion (7.6 Cr) in an auction. Since there are only a few of his finished paintings, you can expect some big money being paid for his paintings.
4. M.F.Hussain’s Battle of Ganga and Jamuna
M.F.Hussain, one of the most prominent names in Indian painting the recent years, has found a place in the club with his narrative paintings. His paintings are said to fetch an average of around a million dollars in a sale or auction. Some of his paintings were sarcastic while some others were serious. Some were funny while some others dark and deep. The painting called ‘Battle of Ganga and Jamuna’ is the most expensive M.F.Hussain painting. It bagged an astounding $1.6 million (8.7Cr) at an auction. Just imagine how much this masterpiece will be worth when placed for sale the next time!
3. Tyeb Mehta’s Figure on Rickshaw
Tyeb Mehta is one of the tallest figures in Indian art painting. He found his interest in modernism and the Bengal School of art became a distant favorite for him. He associated with renowned artists like F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, M.F.Hussain etc in the Bombay Progressive Arts Group. ‘Falling Bird’ and ‘Figure on Rickshaw’ are two of his works that fetched him $1.4 million (7.6 Cr) and $1.9 (10.4 Cr) million respectively. Yes, that’s a lot of money!
2. F.N. Souza’s Birth
A founder member of Progressive Artists’ Group, F.N.Souza, is famous for his expressionistic style of painting. In recent years, i.e. after the demise of Souza, his paintings began to attract interest and money that it deserves. In 2008, his painting ‘Birth’ became the most expensive Indian painting by bagging $2.5million (13.6 Cr)! His works were diverse and one could say he was deliberately working on making them diverse.
A report from The Times of India describes Souza and his works as follows. “Be it the sluts or the suits, the seamy side of life or the steamy, the gnomish, pox-scarred boy from Goa who went on to become one of the first Indian artists to be feted in the salons of Europe, laid it bare.”
1. S.H. Raza’s Saurashtra
S.H. Raza is priciest Indian painter ever. His painting, ‘La Terre’ topped the auctions twice with a $1.9 million(10.4 Cr) sale and another $2.5 million (13.6 Cr) sale. However, this wasn’t even the best performance by an S.H. Raza painting at the world art arena. His painting, ‘Saurashtra’ was sold at an auction for $3.4 million (18.6 Cr), making it the most expensive Indian painting ever!
